With the currently relaxing governmental COVID-19 restrictions, we have received many questions about the future of Alberta Cubers and our return to competitions. The safety and health of the Alberta Cubers community is our first concern, in addition to World Cube Association (WCA) and government guidelines, during this continually evolving situation.
As of September 4th 2021 the WCA safety policy has been updated and now allows competitions to be held as long as they follow all the guidelines of the local laws of the jurisdiction in which the competition will be held. Due to the rising number of daily cases, the government of Alberta has implemented new recommendations which limit social gatherings in the province until further notice. No competitions will be considered until these recommendations are removed.
We at Alberta Cubers believe that we must do our part to protect the health of all members of our cubing community, and that it would be irresponsible to hold a competition when COVID-19 is still very much active in our province. As such, we will not hold a competition before new cases in Alberta fall below 100 daily new cases per million.
Our Policy Going Forward
The Alberta Cubers Team has decided to follow the example of institutions such as the University of Alberta and the Calgary Stampede for our events. All attendees, including spectators, will need masking and proof of vaccination (if eligible for a vaccine) when Alberta Cubers competitions return. To best ensure the safety of our entire community, we will not consider a standard competition until a COVID-19 vaccine is available for younger children.
We know how hard the last year and a half has been for all of you, and we miss cubing competitions as much as you do. We hope to return to competitions soon when it is safe to do so. Please rest assured that our organizers are working behind the scenes to make sure that our first competition back will be safe and fun for everyone. Thank you for your understanding; we hope to see you soon. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
